Segment 1

The Adriatic Institute for Public Policy. Europe & Southeastern Europe. Natasha Srdoč,

Ms. Srdoč speaks about the founding of the Adriatic Institute in 2004… the right time in southeastern Europe. Soon after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, there was an urgent need of“ instituting free market solutions and advancing the rule of law…” Today, these former communist states  are plagued with “corrupt officials…”

Ms. Srdoč comments on the current “migrant crisis…” How the “porous borders” of the Balkan states have become the routes du jour for “drug and human trafficking.” Ms. Srdoč notes that many of these states, admitted into NATO , (Montenegro, in 2015)… (Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia, in 2004. Albania and Croatia, 2009) lack good governance, “rule of law”, (“every citizen is subject to the law, including law makers themselves,”) and are reaping $20 billion in proceeds from the smuggling of heroin from Afghanistan… the money flowing… “uninterruptedly.” (Read what the UN reports, maps and all…) For Ms. Srdoč reforms (and laws) are urgently needed to combat “organized crime…” (See Ms. Srdoč’s article “Paris Attacks and the Kalashnikovs From the Balkans- The Ignored Enemy from Within”)

Are there common challenges faced by Americans and Europeans today? Ms. Srdoč notes that terrorism, the financing of terrorism, (illegal) immigration, radical Islam are some of the common threats faced by Americans and Europeans today. Ms. Srdoč speaks of the mechanisms already in place, and the laws that could be used to eradicate the financing of terrorism… Ms. Srdoč mentions FATCA- (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act …adversely affecting the everyday life of law abiding “US Persons” living and working overseas, as exposed in the website FATCA Legal Action . A lawsuit filed in July 2015 by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., with six current and former U.S. citizens living abroad, challenging the constitutionality of the law passed by a Democrat Congress in 2010)- clarifying,( as she wrote in the Huffington Post in 2016) that it “could lead to a wider effort to track and confiscate illicit financial outflows that hemorrhage nation state budgets especially in nascent democracies receiving US aid.”

Ms. Srdoč also comments on the rise of Anti-Semitism (Austria)…high on the list in Europe; and the BDS (Boycott Divestment & Sanctions) Movement against Israel …
